Lonergan’s season was highlighted by back-to-back 4-touchdown weeks to open the season against Michigan State and Richmond. The rest of the way proved to be very inconsistent, with just 5 touchdown passes and 5 interceptions thrown. A combination of a hurt ankle and a poor offensive line made for a bad experience at Boston College. However, Lonergan offers the Scarlet Knights a strong arm and accuracy across all three levels. His best throws came on intermediate routes, both in the middle of the field and towards the sideline. At Boston College, Lonergan operated in a quick passing offense, maintaining an average depth of target of just 7 yards. He was placed behind a weak offensive line, which necessitated these quicker passes. When given time in the pocket, Lonergan did a solid job of generating chunk plays, getting the ball out on time and with accuracy. At Rutgers, he will be supported by a strong offensive line unit and plenty of weapons, including KJ Duff and Antwan Raymond. Lonergan should be provided more time in the pocket, allowing for improved decision-making and more highlight throws.

The Scarlet Knights are no longer in a development phase. They made this decision based not on who can provide for the future, but on who offers the best chance to win now. They have the talent to win games and need a quarterback who can contribute right away. For Lonergan, it is all about playing smart football and delivering accurate throws.
