Game Preview: Villanova

After falling to #9 Ole Miss on a last second field goal, Louisville looks to rebound against FCS opponent Villanova. The Wildcats went 12-3 in 2025, eventually losing in the FCS semifinals to Illinois State. Let’s get into what I think should be expected of this game!

Villanova Preview:

Villanova had a formidable 2025 season, one which gave many fans some excitement around a program that plays second fiddle to basketball. On top of their impressive record, they returned leading rushers Ja’briel Mace and Isaiah Ragland. Both rushed for over 800 yards in 2025 and are off to a hot start in 2026, averaging over 5.0 YPC. Additionally, Villanova returned starting quarterback Pat McQuaide due to an injunction granting him a 5th season of eligibility. In 2025 he threw for 3000 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. McQuaide’s 2026 campaign is off to a rocky start, throwing for three touchdowns and three interceptions in two games. Their receiver room took a hit, losing 2 of 3 leading receivers. The Wildcats also lost 3 of their five starting offensive lineman, and lost a significant portion of their defensive line. This includes second team all CAA choice Obinna Nbowodo, who posted 26 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. Their secondary is also exponentially less experienced than it was in 2025. Overall, they returned key pieces in the backfield, but nearly everywhere else experienced a lot of turnover. Villanova opened the 2026 season with a loss after blowing a lead to William & Mary, but followed that up by beating Bucknell by 1.

Game Preview:

I fully expect Louisville to win this game by over 40 points. This is not a shot at Villanova or their football program, but they are by far the least talented team the Cards will play this season. On top of that, Louisville will be looking to get ahead early to rest their starters after a short turnaround from the Ole Miss game. I’d also expect Louisville to use this game to get Isaac Brown going after he had a quiet game in the season opener. A lot of things would have to go terribly wrong for Louisville to lose this game. Expect QBs Davin Wydner and Briggs Cherry to get their first snaps in a Louisville uniform. RB Lekhy Thompkins will likely get a lot of touches as well. Louisville would like to use this game to get some reps for their young/inexperienced players on the team.
