USC FOOTBALL TOP 20 MOST IMPORTANT PLAYERS: NO. 19
Luke Wafle on his USC official visit
At No. 19 is one of the most exciting newcomers on USC's roster. Five-star freshman edge rusher Luke Wafle has yet to play a college snap, but the expectations surrounding him make him one of the Trojans' most important players this season.

The Player
Five-star freshman edge rusher Luke Wafle has yet to play a college snap, but the expectations surrounding him make him one of the Trojans' most important players entering the 2026 season. While it is uncommon for a true freshman to earn a spot on a list like this, Wafle is far from an ordinary recruit.
Wafle arrived at USC as the best defensive prospect in the entire 2026 recruiting class. Known for his explosive first step, polished pass-rushing ability, and relentless motor, he gives the Trojans another dynamic athlete off the edge.
Whats Expected In 2026
USC's defensive line made significant strides last season but faded late in the year. Adding a pass rusher with Luke Wafle's upside has the potential to elevate the unit even further. I'd rank Wafle higher than No. 19 if not for the fact that the Trojans return both starting edge rushers from last season, making it more difficult for the talented freshman to earn immediate starter-level snaps.

While veterans are expected to lead the room, Wafle will have every opportunity to carve out meaningful playing time during fall camp. If he adjusts quickly to the speed and physicality of the college game, it would not be surprising to see him become a regular part of the defensive rotation by the middle of the season.
Wafle will compete in one of the deepest edge rooms USC has had in recent years. The Trojans return both starters in junior Kameryn Crawford and senior Braylan Shelby, while redshirt freshman Jayden Ramos is also back after showing promise. USC also added redshirt senior transfer Zuriah Fisher from Penn State, giving the position even more depth. One thing is clear, though: the USC coaching staff made Wafle a top priority in the recruiting cycle, and for good reason.
Ranking Wafle at No. 19 is as much about projection as it is current production. His ceiling is among the highest of any player on USC's roster, and if he develops as quickly as expected, he could become one of the Trojans' most impactful defensive players by the end of the season. USC enters 2026 with Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff aspirations, and Wafle's emergence would give the defense another explosive pass rusher capable of changing games with a single play.
