Purdue Nba Draft Watch

For the last handful of seasons Purdue has consistently produced winning basketball teams, all-americans, and plenty of other players who can compete with the absolute best. Now, two of these Boilermakers are being brought up in serious NBA draft conversations.

Neither Braden Smith or Trey Kaufman-Renn entered college with the same sort of hype as a lot of the 1-and-done types of players we are seeing now. But both Braden and Trey have developed into legitimate prospects through their efforts and time at Purdue.

In Braden’s case he has proven that he has the exact same capabilities of any other guard in the draft. The senior guard has turned into one of the best floor generals in the country. This all combines with his vision, pace control, elite IQ, and his improved scoring ability as an upperclassman. Braden might not pass “looks test” when you first see him in a gym. But what he lacks in size, he more than compensates for in an advanced basketball IQ. Purdue ran an extremely elite offense through him (Best college offense ever during his senior year. According to KenPom). Purdue used his abilities to manipulate defenses, create open shots for teammates, and control the flow, to win a lot of games during his time at Purdue. This level of execution in college, resembles a lot of backup guards in the NBA currently. The biggest caveat is is physical tools, but he is too skilled of a player to not give an opportunity to in the NBA

Trey doesn’t get the same type of national attention that other bigs receive, but his offensive skillset has become too good to ignore. Trey brings something to the table that a lot of NBA teams still highly value: Efficient scoring around the rim. When you combine that with his physicality, touch, and patience you have a pretty good source of offense. What could elevate his draft stock further is his ability to shoot and space the floor. NBA bigs are expected to defend the 3 as well as being able to stretch the floor. His motor also stands out. There is never a question whether he is giving his best, and he shows that through constant hustle, and consistent rebounding.

Neither Braden or Trey are a projected lottery pick. But that isn’t what’s needed to become a successful NBA guy. All that these guys need is a chance in the NBA, and I think both of them are going to turn a lot of heads.
