ETSU Dominates Western Carolina 58-31 in SoCon Opener
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — East Tennessee State opened Southern Conference play in dominant fashion Saturday afternoon, defeating Western Carolina 58-31 at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium in the latest edition of the Blue Ridge Border Battle.
The Buccaneers improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Southern Conference play with the victory, while Western Carolina dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. ETSU controlled the game from the opening kickoff, building a 34-7 halftime lead before finishing with 542 total yards of offense.
ETSU's offense wasted little time getting started. The Buccaneers opened the game with a 16-play, 63-yard drive that ended with D'Marius Rucker scoring on a two-yard touchdown run. After another defensive stop, Jason Albritton added a two-yard touchdown run to give ETSU a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter continued to belong to the Bucs. Ewan Johnson connected on field goals of 33 and 49 yards, while Albritton added another rushing touchdown. Western Carolina finally got on the scoreboard when Lex Thomas broke loose for a 37-yard touchdown run with just over a minute remaining in the half.
ETSU answered immediately.
With only 32 seconds remaining before halftime, quarterback Mason Mims connected with Charlie Browder for a 12-yard touchdown. The score gave the Bucs a 34-7 advantage heading into halftime.
ETSU's first-half performance was particularly impressive. The Buccaneers scored on all six of their offensive possessions and held Western Carolina to just four first downs. ETSU entered halftime with 276 total yards, while the Catamounts had managed only 102.
Mims finished the game 20-of-27 passing for 220 yards and a touchdown, while TJ Peyton led the Buccaneers on the ground with 102 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Albritton scored three rushing touchdowns, and Rucker finished with 68 rushing yards and a touchdown.
The Bucs showed no signs of slowing down after halftime.
Johnson opened the second-half scoring with a 43-yard field goal before Peyton found the end zone on a one-yard touchdown run. The score pushed ETSU's lead to 44-7 with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter.
Western Carolina eventually found some offensive rhythm, with Thomas contributing additional touchdowns as the Catamounts attempted to cut into the massive deficit. The Catamounts scored 24 points in the second half, but ETSU continued answering with points of its own.
Albritton added his third rushing touchdown of the afternoon, while Jaiden Daniels scored the first collegiate touchdown of his career on a one-yard run. Western Carolina added two late touchdowns, but the comeback effort was never realistic after ETSU's dominant first half.
The final numbers reflected ETSU's control of the game.
The Bucs finished with 542 total yards, including 309 through the air and 233 on the ground. They recorded 27 first downs and converted 8-of-13 third-down opportunities. ETSU was also perfect in the red zone, finishing 8-for-8 with seven touchdowns.
The defense played an important role in building the early advantage. ETSU recorded four sacks, including two from Charles Woodard and one each from Samuel Iroh and Damari Burton. Jamari Farmer led the Bucs with nine tackles, while Jarvis Johnson and Mike Jenkins each finished with seven.
ETSU's 58 points marked its highest scoring total against a Division I opponent since the football program's return to the FCS level. The Buccaneers also recorded their highest total offensive output of the season with 542 yards.
The victory marked ETSU's third consecutive win over Western Carolina and allowed the Bucs to retain the Blue Ridge Border Battle trophy in Johnson City.
With the win, ETSU now turns its attention to another Southern Conference rivalry. The Buccaneers will return to William B. Greene Jr. Stadium next Saturday to host Chattanooga, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
After opening conference play with one of its most dominant performances of the season, ETSU enters its next rivalry matchup with a 1-0 record in SoCon play and plenty of momentum.
