Star Guard commits to Kentucky: What it means for the Wildcats

Alex Wilkins, a 6’5” guard from Massachusetts, has committed to Kentucky, giving Mark Pope and the Wildcats a huge boost heading into next season.

Wilkins is coming off an impressive freshman campaign at Furman and led the Paladins to the 2026 NCAA tournament where he scored 21 points in a close loss in the Round of 64 to UConn.

Wilkins was the No. 41-ranked transfer according to 247Sports recruiting and chose Kentucky over other blue bloods Kansas and UConn. Wilkins will bring high-octane playmaking combined with size and major scoring ability, making him a versatile guard threat for the 2026-27 Wildcats team.

For Kentucky and Mark Pope landing Wilkins proves Pope has the ability to win high caliber recruiting battles for BBN.

The fit becomes immediately intriguing as his commitment bolsters Kentucky’s backcourt. Wilkins will pair with former Washington guard Zoom Diallo. The two will make a highly explosive duo and Wilkins’s ability to score off of the dribble should give the Wildcats a dynamic offensive identity. Wilkins and Diallo will be a threatening one-two punch in the SEC.

Wilkins should be a day one starter and will come in as a huge upgrade at the guard spot.  With his March experience and high level scoring ability will help build momentum for Kentucky’s future portal additions. The questions surrounding Kentucky now become can the revamped backcourt provide inspiration for more big time portal commitments and help push the Wildcats into true SEC and NCAA tournament title contention in 2026-27.
