Follow along here as the Sun Devils continue fall ball action in Game 1 of the Maroon and Gold series at Phoenix Municipal Stadium!
Senior Georgia transfer Luke Wiltrakis is on the mound for team Maroon. He gets a quick two outs in the first off the bats of Jett Berry and Preston Newberry.
Wiltrakis strikes out Dominic Smaldino to retire the side and team maroon is pumped!
Landon Hairston gets a single to left field off of starting pitcher Austin Musso to start off the bottom of the 1st. Not great power but it found a hole. Star transfer Jackson Hotchkiss is up to bat next.
Hotchkiss draws a walk, and team maroon has runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs in the bottom of the 1st. Great at bat from Jackson there.
Chandler Gilbert Community College transfer catcher Adolfo Pacheco gets hit to load the bases with 0 outs. Sophomore Brendan Lewis steps up to bat looking to make noise as team gold makes a mound visit.
Lewis pops out to 2nd. 1 out. That gets followed up by a Jordan Ransom 2 run single, as a runner got thrown out on the play.
Catcher Brody Briggs back picks Ransom at first on a beautiful throw to Smaldino and after 1 the score is 2-0 team maroon.
TOP 2ND: Transfer David Hogg II K’s up looking for the 2nd out of the inning. Fouled off a good pitch deep to right earlier in the at bat.
Preston Newberry draws a walk in a great battle of an at bat. 2 outs, runner on first for team gold.
Finn Leach flies out to left field to end the inning. Wiltrakis looks great on the mound.
Senior Sam Myers strikes out swinging and there are 2 outs in the bottom of the 2nd.
Landon Hairston hits a hard ground ball to the 5-6 hole and reaches on an errant throw by Davis Perkins. Hairston then advanced to 2nd. standing up. Hotchkiss follows that up with a 2 run bomb. 4-0 team maroon.
TOP 3: Brody Briggs with a hard ground ball up the middle for a single.
Davis Perkins strikes out for the first out of the inning. There are runners on 1st and 2nd.
The runners advanced via a wild pitch by Wiltrakis. Runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs.
Smaldino starts to make his way towards first on a pitch he thought was a ball on a 3-1 count. It didn’t matter as he roped a single to right center field on the next pitch, scoring 2 runs. 4-2 team maroon.
Ollie Boone enters the game on the mound for Wiltrakis. Sheridan lays down a weak hit equivalent to a bunt advancing Smaldino to 2nd. Smaldino then advances to 3rd via a wild pitch.
Hogg II ropes a double to left center field, scoring Smaldino. 4-3 team maroon as team gold gains some momentum.
Boone strikes out Newberry to end the top of the 3rd. The damage has already been done however, as team gold puts up 3 runs. They now only trail by 1.
BOTTOM 3: Lewis starts off the inning with a leadoff triple to right center field. That ball was roped.
Sam Myers grounds out to the shortstop to end the inning. Lewis gets stranded at 3rd.
TOP 4: Finn Leach lays down a pretty bunt and 3rd baseman Jackson Weber can’t field it, as Leach reaches. Brody Briggs is then hit to put runners on 1st and 2nd.
Dominic Smaldino gets intentionally walked to load the bases with 2 outs and up to bat comes Caden Sheridan.
Ollie Boone gets out of it as Sheridan grounds out to 2nd. It’s 4-3 team maroon halfway through.
BOTTOM 4: Hotchkiss hits a 2 run bomb scoring Hairston for his 2nd homer of the night. It’s 6-3 team maroon. Homer was off of Ryan Caruso.
BOTTOM 5: Sam Myers leads off the bottom of the 5th with a triple to the right center field wall. Hairston follows it with a double down the left field line and it’s 7-3 team maroon.
Liam Roche enters the game on the mound for team gold. Brody Briggs a few pitches after catches Landon Hairston trying to steal 3rd.
BOTTOM 6: Ransom gets jammed but drops in a blooper to shallow right field for a leadoff single.
Jackson Weber goes yard, scoring Ransom. Freshman talent on display as team maroon is running away with this one, leading 9-3.
Jackson Hotchkiss. He hits his 3rd homer of the night, giving team Maroon the 10-3 lead.
TOP 7: Josh Butler puts up a great outing, allowing 0 runs. He is done tonight as freshman Mason Henry enters the game on the mound for team Maroon.
Jett Berry ropes an opposite field single to left field, scoring 1. It’s 10-4 team Maroon with 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd for team Gold.
Davis Perkins smokes one to left center field for a 2 run double. It’s 10-6 as team Gold is chipping away.
Dominic Smaldino flies out to deep center field to end it. That was 107 off the bat.
Team Maroon wins game 1 10-6.
